Dual Sport Conversion
We have collected data from many states on what is required to convert a dirt bike for street legal dual sport use.**
Arizona
Headlight (High and low not required), Tires in good condition (Dot not needed), Tail light, Exhaust system, License plate light, Brakes must be able to stop and hold the vehicle, rear view mirrors on the left side, horn (electric or squeeze type).
California
Headlight with working high and low beam, high beam indicator, front and rear turn signals, front and rear brakes, tail light (running light, brake light, license plate light), horn. Note: If the eighth digit in your VIN number has a 3 or a C you won't be able to make your bike street legal.
Colorado
Headlight (high or low beam), tail light, brake light, license plate light, exhaust must be in good working order with out excessive noise or excessive smoking, rear view mirror on the left side, brake (adequate to stop and hold the vehicle).
Idaho
Headlight, tail light, brake light, mirror on left side (adjustable), horn (squeeze type or electric), license plate light (optional).
Michigan
Headlight (high and low beam), tires must be DOT approved for street use, tail light, exhaust must be in good working order with out excessive noise or excessive smoking (Michigan has 94db limit), brakes must be able to stop and hold the vehicle, horn.
Montana
Headlight (high or low beam), tail light, tires must be DOT approved for street use, exhaust must be in good working order and with out excessive smoking or excessive noise, mirror on the left side of the vehicle, front and rear brakes (adequate to stop and hold the vehicle), license plate light, brake light.
Nevada
State requires that a certified mechanic inspects the brakes and steering and sign off on the form available from the DMV, headlight (doesn't need to be hi/low), tail light, brake light (must have a front and rear brake switch), front and rear turn signals, horn, mirrors on both the left and right side of the handlebars with a diameter of 3”, and a rear reflector.
New Mexico
Headlight, Taillight, W/Brake light switch front or rear, Horn & Mirror. Squeeze or Bulb Type Horn Should Work.
Ohio
Headlight (high and low beam with high beam indicator), tail light, brake light, and license plate light should all operate off of the battery, front and rear turn signals, speedometer with a non-resettable odometer, horn, dot approved tires.
Wyoming
Headlight (high or low beam), horn, tail light, brake light, license plate light, exhaust must be in good working order and must not put out and excessive amount of smoke or noise, mirror on the left side of the bike, front and rear bikes .
